Witt took command of the SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 1 of the Leibstandarte SS, which he led through most of 1943. For the accomplishments of his men and his own leadership, he was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves by Hitler. He later commanded the 12th SS-Panzer Division until he was killed by allied naval artillery fire shortly after the Allied invasion of Normandy.
