In the US, Cuba is portrayed as a backward Communist dictatorship hell-hole where people live in grinding poverty and infrastructure is falling apart. However, not only is this a distorted, inaccurate picture, but it ignores the numerous areas where Cuba does better than the US.
While homelessness is soaring in the US, in Cuba it is effectively non-existent. Homelessness in the US has risen by 11% this year to reach the highest level in 15 years since US authorities started collecting data.
In contrast, housing is considered a human right in Cuba, and rent is capped at 10% of family income. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Fidel Castro introduced housing subsidies and state-owned homes to combat homelessness, almost eradicating it as a social problem. Today, thanks to government subsidies, around 90% of Cubans own their own home compared to about 65.9% in the US.

🇨🇺 The Cuban Giant
Heavyweight wrestler Mijaín López Núñez became the first athlete to win Olympic gold five times in a row. Now he says goodbye
By Sören Bär, August 15, 2024
Full article here
In the Olympic heavyweight final, the Cuban wrestler Mijaín López Núñez beat the Chilean Yasmani Acosta Fernández 6-0 on points.
López has remained undefeated at the Olympic Games for 16 years since Beijing 2008 and has now won five Olympic victories in a row in the 120 to 130 kg class Greco-Roman style.
Never before has a male wrestler managed to win five Olympic titles. Even more impressive, however, is another record the Cuban now holds: He is also the only athlete to win five Olympic gold medals in a row in the same individual discipline.
After Tokyo 2021, López was already on a level with Japanese wrestler Kaori Ichō and Paul Elvstrøm (Denmark, sailing) as well as US athletes Carl Lewis (track and field, long jump), Michael Phelps (swimming, 200 m freestyle), Katie Ledecky (swimming, 800 m freestyle) and Al Oerter (track and field, discus), all of whom had won the same Olympic competition four times without interruption. López has now surpassed them, defying not only the younger competition but also his own body: according to coach Raul Trujillo, López suffered four herniated discs.
After his fifth Olympic triumph in the final match in the Champ de Mars Arena, López enjoyed the ovation from the enthusiastic audience, he then took off his shoes and left them in the middle of the mat - a common ritual among wrestlers as an allegory for the end of an active career.
The imposing 1.95 m López was born on August 20, 1982 in Herradura in the province of Pinar Del Río on the western tip of Cuba. Because of his gigantic shape, he is also known as the “Giant of Herradura”.
López won his first major title at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. He has since defended this title three times, in 2007, 2011 and 2015.
He also became heavyweight Greco-Roman world champion in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2014. He has been his country's flag bearer at each of the last four Olympic opening ceremonies.
With his most recent victory, López won the 22nd Olympic Games fight in a row; his only Olympic defeat was 20 years ago: In Athens 2004, he lost in the quarterfinals to Russian Khassan Barojew, his first major rival on the global stage. Barojew won gold in the end - at that time the heavyweight weight was still limited to 120 kg. López was able to defeat Barojew for the first time at the World Championships the following year in 2005, but the Russian prevailed against López in the final of the 2006 World Championships in Guangzhou (China).
The following year, the Cuban took revenge in Baku (Azerbaijan) by defeating Baroyev and securing his second world title since 2005. López paid tribute to his great rival with the words “Barojew is my greatest opponent. The gold is either his or mine."
López, who became heavyweight world champion again in Herning (Denmark) in 2009 and in Moscow in 2010, lost his title in Istanbul in 2011 when he lost in the final to the Turk Rıza Kayaalp, who became the Cuban's main rival in Barojew's place. They met again in the semi-finals at the 2012 London Olympics. López took a comfortable victory and ultimately secured his second gold medal.
From then on he emulated his role model Alexander Karelin (Russia), who won gold in Seoul in 1988, Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, López drew level with him: "I'm so proud to have reached the same level as the great Karelin, it's simply an enormous honour," he emphasized at the time.
López continued his impressive winning streak at the postponed Tokyo Olympics in 2021, winning his fourth gold in the same month he turned 39. After the victory he said: "I have to thank our Comandante (Fidel Castro) and the Cuban Revolution for this result."
Saying goodbye to competitive sport will not be easy: "Wrestling has determined my life, wrestling was that “Love of my life,” López summed up his brilliant career.

⚡️🇷🇺🇺🇦 While all Western media and TV channels are focusing on the "mega-successful" Harakiri action of the Armed Forces of Ukraine somewhere near Kursk, the front is moving west of the town of Avdeevka, far beyond it.
A short video shows the shift of the Ukrainian theater front in the direction of Krasnoarmeysk during the miserable attempt of Zelensky in the Kursk region.
That's just 10 days ladies and gentlemen.
