Passing on the legacy of charity and generosity to our children

Nnemma sent me this message spontaneously and it gave me pure unending joy

She wants me to send money to a relative of ours who got admitted into University in Naija as a gift to congratulate her

I am always telling my children that we can never forget our people back home in Naija…. We must always remember them and support them with what we have no matter how little

This is how I achieve it

My children know a lot about my acts of charity to my family and to a lot of others outside of my family

Infact I involve them by asking them to bring their own money and send to the person I am sending money to (usually family members)

I remind them to do charity when they are paid ….They will send money to Naija to do the charity

I tell them how I buy foodstuff for my mum and when she sends me a voice note thanking me and praying for me, I send it to my children to listen so they know what I am telling the is true and they see the effects it is having on my mother, the way it made her happy and all that. It made them start sending money and even buying foodstuff to my mother so she can be happy and pray for them too

They felt the joy I feel each time I do this

These things are the practical ways I teach my children how to love humanity and give back to humanity from what God had bless them with

It must begin at home but must extend outside of home

This right here is proof that what I am doing is working wonders in my children

I teach parents so many skills on raising children who will give them joy and make them proud

One the things we parents struggle with is when our children want to do some Gen Z things like

-Getting Tattoos
-Dyeing their hairs other colours
-Boys wearing earrings
-Boys plaiting hair
-Girls having piercings in other parts of their bodies apart from the ear lobe

These things give many parents of my generation nightmares because of the stereotypes that have been created around them

Stereotypes of “efurefuism” is associated with these looks and many parents are super scared of their children wanting to tow that path

Some parents have reached out to me to know how they should handle this

This is what I think and the methods I employ

Pls resist the urge to shout and scream at them for wanting this…. Don’t punish them for verbalising their desires. They are mostly yielding to peer pressure so pls know that the manner you use to handle it will determine the outcome

If they are still a child (less than 18 yrs) you can stop him using firmness and authority and citing that it is against your family values. Pls explain what those values are and why they are your values and the benefits of such values ans that’s why you won’t allow it for them.

Do not be high handed and unreasonable about it, make them understand that they are not being weird or strange to want to do things like that. Normalise those desires but proceed to explaining to them the reasons why it is not wise to do that, citing real life examples of their consequences. That is why they are not allowed to do it.

Try and be very factual ( keep your emotional at bay, emotions can make you irrational) about it when communicating it to them.

Inject a lot of emotional intelligence as you talk to your child even in your firmness and authority. No harshness. Make the conversation affectionate and loving even as you are being firm and authoritative. This will hit the right notes in meeting the child’s emotional needs and they are more likely to accept your authority without resentment

But if they are already an adult (over 18 yrs of age), you can only advise it based on the kind of relationship and influence you have with them. If you don’t have a good parent child relationship with them they will not take your advice, they will do what he wants because he has a right to do that.

And you better not let that choice affect your already shaky relationship with him. You must respect their choice if he insists no matter how pained you are about it, you must recognise they have the right to make that choice, so avoid being punitive. No judgements whatsoever. No abuse of any kind. Forget about the problem and focus on strengthening your relationship with them and forming tight bonds of emotional connection with them so you can increase your influence in their lives and perhaps succeed in convincing them to abandon that lifestyle.

How you handle it will determine if your relationship with him will improve or further deteriorate. No high handedness should be used at any stage. Just advice and influence that’s all.

An adult child listening to you and taking on board your advice is solely based on the kind of relationship you created with them from babyhood till they reached adulthood.

That is why I am always harping on parents being more intentional about having a strong tight emotional connection and a very solid relationship with their children from a very early age.

Because it is that relationship that will determine the outcome of your parenting. It is what will make you very influential in their lives after they have reached adulthood. It is what will make them keep listening to you and following your advice even as adults who are independent of you.

Just finished calling my mother on video to find out how she is preparing for her 74th birthday tomorrow

My brothers and I don settle her but she wants it low key this year

I was trying to convince her to have something more elaborate but she insisted that she wants it very low key this year
