The Soviet Union launches the first animal into space—a dog name Laika—aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Laika, part Siberian husky, lived as a stray on the Moscow streets before being enlisted into the Soviet space program.

Marie Antoinette was born in Vienna on this day in 1755. She was the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa. She married the future King of France Louis XVI which was celebrated in the Royal Chapel at Versailles on 16 May 1770; one of the principal architects of the reconciliation between France and Austria.
