Mackie recently disclosed that playing the role made her realise she herself is bisexual. She was 29 at this point. She got all the way to 29 without making this all-important realisation about herself. Having made it, she is now in a lesbian marriage. I can forgive a lot of hopeful thinking about multiculturalism early on, because while the numbers were tiny it would have been easy to imagine that “we’ll find a way to rub along together”.
