Why is the crypto market up today?

The crypto market surged on May 8, with total capitalization rising 2.5% to $3.06 trillion. Bitcoin and Ether led the rally, gaining 2.3% and 4%, respectively.

The Federal Reserve’s decision to hold rates at 4.25%-4.50% has sparked renewed interest in crypto. Fed Chair Jerome Powell highlighted stagflation risks—slowing growth combined with persistent inflation—partly driven by Trump’s tariff policies.

This uncertain environment is seen as favorable for Bitcoin, often viewed as a hedge against inflation and “digital gold.” Investors are turning to crypto to protect value, echoing patterns seen during the 2020 stimulus-driven surge.

Grayscale’s Zach Pandl noted that stagflation concerns could benefit Bitcoin, reinforcing its role as a store of value in times of economic tension.

Adding to the momentum is optimism over a possible US-UK trade deal. Trump hinted at a “major” agreement with a “respected country,” which sources confirmed as the UK. Such a deal could ease global trade tensions and lift broader market sentiment, including for crypto.

Bitcoin jumped nearly 4% following the announcement, extending its weeklong rally. Other major tokens followed suit, as the Crypto Fear & Greed Index returned to “greed” territory, reflecting rising investor confidence.

Technically, the market’s rebound began at a key $2.4 trillion support. Since then, the total crypto market cap has risen 30%, now trading above $3 trillion for the first time in two months.

The next resistance lies between $3.1 and $3.25 trillion. Breaking that could signal a sustained bullish trend, with an eye on the all-time high above $3.69 trillion.

The daily RSI has climbed from oversold levels to 68, suggesting increasing bullish momentum.
