Fr. Paul Murphy from Waterford has been named as the priest who was stabbed outside Galway Barracks while visiting in his work as army chaplain.

Soldiers had to open fire to stop the attacker. Fr. Murphy is in a serious condition in hospital.

It's reported the teenage attacker spoke about Irish military involvement in the Middle East.
