Some sketches from my 2012-2013 deployment in Afghanistan.

A Frenchman, Army bubbas and some of the Mongolian camp guards playing pool and foozball. The watercolors were kept in an Altoids tin that I converted into a paint palette that fit easily in one of my plate carrier pouches.

Prior to embarking on my insanely ambitious graphic novel about adventurous animal-people with swords & airships, my work was stuff like this for a few years. Sketching/painting stuff from life around me. At the time I was considering a more "fine illustration" path; editorial art, historic painting, stuff like that.

In the end I found it more valuable as a learning experience along the way to later rediscovering my love of pulp-adventure and storytelling art.

If you'd like to see more, I've got a bunch on my website's Field Art page here:

Skull and teeth studies from my Leuchtturm A6 sketchbook.

Animal teeth and head angles are some of the most wildly challenging things to draw, so I try to keep my characters' anatomical structure fresh in my mind by doing a lot of "x-ray" and 3D-rotated sketching as you see here.

I usually start out without reference, since it forces me to dig into memory for how something (teeth or skull dimensions) should look. I'll sketch a bit with very light erasable lines, then look at a skeletal reference to see if I got it right. I then make adjustments as needed before fleshing it out.

Posted in 300dpi to my Patreon Sketch Collection last year.

๐Ÿ“ธ: The Merchant of Death, who was released during the Brittany Griner exchange, is back to selling Russian weapons to US adversaries. Viktor "Merchant of Death" Bout is currently selling weapons to the Houthi Rebels in Yemen.

โ€œWhen Houthi emissaries went to Moscow in August to negotiate the purchase of $10 million [ยฃ7.7 million] worth of automatic weapons, they encountered a familiar face: the moustachioed Bout,โ€ the Telegraph said.

Currently, rumor is that the Houthi rebels are working on acquiring anti-ship missile systems.

The Wall Street Journal said that the first two arms deliveries negotiated by Bout will be AK-47 rifles, one of the most durable rifles ever produced and a successful Kremlin export since it was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1947.

Rabbit swordsman, drawn in my Leuchtturm A6 pocketbook with a Uni Signo .38mm gel pen.

Just finished reading Fitzpatrick's War by Theodore Judson. Amazing book. Bought it solely because of the cool cover (I'm a sucker for Archeo-Futuristic steam/dieselpunk settings with feudalism, firearms and fighter planes), but the story was an incredible treat. Highly recommended.

Now starting on SHลŒGUN by James Clavell. Happened upon this $1 copy at a thrift store, just before I heard there was a new streaming series based off it. Right when I needed some samurai inspiration for my own comic.

Aside from vague memories of the old 80s VHS miniseries with my uncle as a kid, I'm flying blind on this one.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ At least 80% of Iranian missiles hit targets during the 'first wave of strikes on Israel,' with a second wave expected, reports the Fars agency, citing a source.

However, Israel does not anticipate a second wave of attacks from Iran. According to a military spokesperson, residents may leave the shelters.
