โ–ถ๏ธ What is a phrasal verb?

Phrasal verbs are a group of two or more words which perform the same function as another verb. A phrasal verb is a phrase that is made up of a main verb and an adverb, a preposition or both. They are idiomatic ways of expressing an action. Think of it like a sandwich:

[Main Verb] + adverb/preposition/adverb and preposition = phrasal verb

Phrasal verbs are unique to English and other Germanic languages and can cause issues for English learners. They can be transitive (they take a direct object), intransitive (they do not take a direct object), separable (they can be separated) and inseparable (they cannot be separated). Although the meanings differ, phrasal verbs are conjugated just like main verbs. For example, to break down conjugates like to break:
The car breaks down.
The car broke down.

๐Ÿ“ Here are some common phrasal verbs to get you started:

โ›“ bring up - to mention a topic
Ex: He brought up the fact that I was too short to go on the
rollercoaster.
โ›“ call off - to cancel
Ex: She called off the wedding.
โ›“ carry on - to continue
Ex: The bag was heavy and my feet hurt, but I carried on with the
walk.
โ›“ deal with - to handle
Ex: I canโ€™t deal with stress.
โ›“ end up - to reach a state or place
Ex: They ended up in Sheffield.
โ›“ fall through - to not happen
Ex: Our plans to meet for coffee fell through.
โ›“ get on with (something) - to continue to do
Ex: She was busy, so I got on with my essay.
โ›“ hand in - to submit
Ex: I handed in my thesis.
โ›“ join in - to participate
Ex: She joined in the conversation at the party.
โ›“ keep up with - to stay at the same pace or level.
Ex: My boss talks too fast and I canโ€™t keep up.
โ›“ let down - to disappoint
Ex: She was supposed to collect me at 6:00 but she didnโ€™t. She really let me down.
