🖼 Pudgy Penguins wants to use its NFT-inspired toys to bring IP to the real world

Pudgy Penguins, an (admittedly adorable) NFT collection that also doubles as a web3 IP company, is releasing a line of toys dubbed Pudgy Toys, Luca Netz, CEO of the company, told TechCrunch+ in an exclusive interview. As the NFT sector continues to waddle through a period of frosty consumer interest, some collections are diving deep, exploring new waters and expanding their horizons to the physical realm in hopes of reaching more people and growing their brand.

The penguin plushies are being made in collaboration with PMI, which also produces toys for Fortnite and Among Us, Netz said. The company sees physical toys as a “Trojan horse” for the web3 ecosystem and NFTs. “Unfortunately, NFT revenue is not sustainable and it’s not really growable,” Netz acknowledged, adding that the toys are meant to make the company more sustainable. “Secondly, we wanted to create an IP that transcends this ecosystem, and the way I know how to do that is through physical products.”. Launched in 2021 and acquired by Netz in April 2022, the 8,888-NFT collection has grown to include real-world products.

Web3 education platform Curious Addys and non-fungible token (NFT) educator Zeneca are teaming up to roll out HeyMint, a beginner NFT platform meant to help creators build out their first collection. With a goal of easing the minting process for creators and onboarding new entrants to Web3, HeyMint aims to be an accessible, equitable and low-cost creative tool. Creators can upload their artistic asset, choose their desired blockchain, create an allow list presale and enforce royalties.

HeyMint currently supports Ethereum and three Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible chains – Polygon, Arbitrum and Optimism. Creators pay no fees to list their collections and collectors are charged $1 per mint. Mai Akiyoshi, CEO of Curious Addys, told CoinDesk that creators need tools that welcome them into the Web3 space rather than alienate them through complicated processes. Curious Addys and Zeneca have already amassed $5 million from their own NFT collections and have worked with notable brands such as Universal Music Group and the World of Women NFT collection. Zeneca previously founded Zen Academy, an online course to help bring new NFT collectors into Web3.

⚡️ LG Electronics Seeking Patent for a Blockchain-Based NFT-Trading Smart TV

South Korea’s consumer electronics giant LG Electronics is seeking a patent for a blockchain-based smart TV that would allow users to trade NFTs with ease. The details of this patent application were published on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) database last Thursday. The application describes a TV that integrates blockchain technology in several unique ways.

The TV also incorporates QR codes so that smartphones could be used to quickly complete a transaction. It’s crucial to note that a patent application does not necessarily guarantee that LG Electronics will proceed with this product. It hasn’t been granted yet nor does anyone know if LG still wants to build it. Given that WIPO patent applications are published 18 months after filing, LG Electronics’ enthusiasm for the idea might have waned, especially considering the current slump in NFTs. This is only one of the many ways LG plans on integrating blockchain technology into their products and services.

🟠 Binance Launches a Metaverse Investment Competition, Featuring Web3 Startups

Binance is making its first entry into the metaverse by launching “Build The Block.” The globally renowned Blockchain and cryptocurrency firm, designed Build the Block as a digital series that will enable web3 startups to compete for investments from Binance Labs. Binance is adding to its list of impacts in the Blockchain industry that is not limited to trading cryptocurrencies. Binance Studio, the Binance in-house Web3 global creative studio for Binance created the project Build The Block in partnership with Lifeform.

One of the difficulties encountered by Web3 startups is little to no funds to effectively penetrate the market and offer their solutions. The Binance Build The Block project, which is in show format, will enable startups to access funds for web3 startups hence giving them a leap into the industry. The competition will feature 12 projects competing for the top spot by impressing a live audience and a panel of judges. The judges include Yi He; Yibo Ling, CBO of Binance; co-founder of Coin Bureau, Guy Turner; Azeem Khan, member of the WEF’s Crypto Sustainability Coalition and partnership lead at Gitcoin. She continued that Binance believes in what metaverse and Blockchain could offer.

🖼 LG Electronics Seeks Patent for TV Which Lets Users Trade NFTs

Electronics firm LG is seeking patent protection for a television that enables users to trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The device would be able to establish a connection with an NFT market server, receive and display preview artwork and fulfil purchases via the user's cryptocurrency wallet which would be connected to the TV. LG began its work bringing NFTs to its TVs last September with the release of its Art Lab marketplace.

The move to file for a patent suggests that LG sees ongoing consumer demand for NFTs in the future and sees a business case for making them more accessible. The South Korean firm is not the only electronics giant to have spotted an opportunity in bringing NFTs to TVs. Samsung released an NFT marketplace on three of its TVs in January 2022, supported by Nifty Gateway. Actors Rosario Dawson and Tony Revolori are both set to star in Ghosts of Ruin, a Western anime series from Gala Film, the entertainment arm of Web3 startup Gala Games.
