Jasper Councillor Scott Wilson on April 2, 2024 with plans for the town of Jasper(50% of which just burnt down) as a 15 minute city: “The Federal Government was represented by the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and his message was clear, we need to take rapid and urgent action on housing. Parks Canada as a Federal agency must heed that call, they must take this obligation seriously and take swift and appropriate action as the controlling government body over Land Use, Planning and Development in the Municipality of Jasper… Legalizing density is the single most important thing we can do in Canada to deliver housing in a climate smart way…
Building is inherently very risky. We need to minimize that risk for the private market as well as
Municipally led housing projects. We must remove barriers on developers: offsite levies,subdivision and up zoning costs should be reduced or removed to entice potential development…
We are a 15-minute city, we have public transit, to enforce the antiquated view that vehicles take precedent over housing has to end immediately. We must build policy that streamlines development.”
