Alternatives to DetectX Swift?
Hello, I normally use DetectX Swift to scan for malware, but it seems unsupported as for August 2024 (no updates in ages). I was wondering whether I should go for another option, and what said alternative might be -- I am very happy to buy software as a one off purchase but I will not get a subscription. Any ideas?

The 50% sale for Affinity Publisher/Designer/Photo ends on August 15th.
For those that don't know Affinity makes three products that are competitors of Creative Cloud:Affinity Publisher: Adobe InDesignAffinity Photo: Adobe PhotoshopAffinity Designer: Adobe IllustratorThese products are probably not as full-featured as their Adobe counterparts. But they have the advantage of being a one-time purchase with no subscription. The current 50% off sale price is $82.99 and that gets you all 3 apps on Mac, Windows AND iPad.I think that's probably the cost of 2 months of Creative Cloud. So if you were thinking about it, you only have one more week to get on board.

Big update for Find Any File
Find Any File (FAF) is Spotlight on steroids. There's a shareware version and soon there will be a pro version with even faster search times. It is an app I use on a daily basis for quite some time already. Not only for just searching a folder or file, but also for finding collections of files or folders that can be dragged/dropped from FAF into folders, renamed with a renaming app. etc. There are many scenarios where FAF is helpful.Today a big update was released (2.5), of which I put the release notes below.Disclaimer: I'm not the dev, nor affiated with FAF. I'm just posting this here out of enthousiasm for the app.Release notesAdds a "Name without Extension" rule.Adds verb "doesn't match RegEx" to the "Name" and "Text content" rules.Renames verb "contains" into "contains phrase" for the "Text content" rule because that's how it behaves.Changes the "Contains Words" rule: It does not consider an underscore ("_") as part of a word any more.Removes the hidden "Name Ends With includes extension" preference since there is now a specific rule for that ("Name without Extension").Holding the Option key with the search location popup menu open will now also show the System and Data members of bootable volumes. If you choose a "(Data)" volume as the search destination, it'll skip the original files installed by Apple, making the search faster. If you're searching only for files you created, this is a useful method to speed things up.Adds "AppleScript" and "Executable" to the Kind rule. Now shows a cloud symbol for offline files (i.e. those in iCloud).New "File Server Settings" window for managing NAS and other network volumes.New: Can now search on NAS and *nix server much faster by running the "find" command remotely. Requires a Pro license for testing (see website).New: FAF now remembers the opened Find windows and restores them at the next launch. If you want to reload the saved default search instead, see the File menu for the shortcut to "Restore Default Search".Volumes can now be hidden from the locations menu. See Hidden Volumes. The popup menus for the search location, Kind and Label can now be sorted by holding down the cmd key.The popup menus for the search location and the rules can now show the hidden (expert) items by holding down the Option key.Adds expert rule Use 'find' tool (only useful with a Pro license).Adds expert rule "Spotlight" to determine whether to include or exclude Spotlight.Makes the "Scripts" rule visible without expert mode.Removes the "Use SI units" setting from the Preferences window because it's hardly used any more. Still available as a hidden preference.Adds menu commands for changing the Font size in the Results window (with cmd-plus and cmd-minus).The Purchase menu can now be made visible with the Option key, even if the app is already registered.Fix: A single click on a folder in the Path Bar at the bottom of the Results window now opens the folder in Finder, just like it happens in Finder's windows.Fix: If a file name contains a Carriage Return (CR) character, it's now displayed as "␍".The rules for Invisible, Package and Trashed items will now remove those items from the results instead of just hiding them.Fixes an issue where, after trashing a folder with matched items inside, their new state being in the Trash was not correctly recognized. Results now show the total file size when more than one item is selected.Shift-Copy ("Copy Columns") in Tree view now adds a "depth" column, indicating the indentation level of each row.New scripts for searching EXIF tags and finding duplicate (identical) files.Adds some new script features, such as a new function to run shell commands asynchronously, allowing the use of the new "Duplicates" script. It's now possible to install scripts directly from the website with a simple click on the "Install" button there.Fix: Renaming a file is not canceled by automatic updates to the results any more.Fix: When adding files to Results from clipboard, leading and trailing whitespace is now…

App blocker that blocks other apps that have just a UI with menu bar icons, and no dock icon
Looking for an app that can block other apps, even the ones which only have UI with menu bar icons, and no dock icon (examples of such apps - ScreenZen). I tried 1Focus, HeyFocus etc., but they don't have this. Cisdem Focus is able to do it, but reviews are not great.

Meteorologist - Free and Open-Source Menu Bar Weather
Menu bar displayKeeping track of current weather conditions and forecasts is a breeze (no pun intended) with the free and powerful menu bar app. Meteorologist, a free and open-source utility available on Sourceforge. I've user Meteorologist for years and have been impressed by a steady stream of updates. To save on space, the basic display on the menu bar is just a city name and the temperature, plus an icon displaying current conditions or if there are weather warnings. Clicking on the menu bar display gives you info for up to 12 user configurable cities.PreferencesYou can also access the following for each city in your list:Details on current conditionsThe name of the weather providerCurrent radarHourly forecastExtended forecastThe preferences menu is extensive and allows you to control the amount and variety of information presented along with its appearance. Meteorologist is suitable for international users since all of its measurement units are user configurable. There are seven weather information providers available to choose from and you can use different providers for different cities if you want to.

Note app for capturing/filing “bits of info”?
Any suggestions for this need?I’ve never been able to effectively capture and file “bits of info”: - URLs or text clips while in a browser, reddit, Youtube - ex: for reading/watching later, or while shopping for a new toy - short strings, like a friend’s garage code, or dates of repeated medical procedures from my patient portal - on-the-run thoughts, movie/restaurant recommendations, to-dos (which I don’t mind moving to a real to-do app later).I imagine something like being able easily highlight a string, be given a prompt for a tag, and have it stored in a central spot, accessible from anywhere (in my case, any Apple device). If there’s no time for that, then plop it in an “in” queue for filing later. And, ideally be able to “collaborate” (share) with spouse or other friends/family/colleagues. Capture must be easy, filing can be free-form.An example: I’m learning about NASs, to know what the considerations are, to choose a model, and to set it up properly. I google and explore the first page of hits, scour reddit, saving URLs, clips, and my brief summaries in an Apple Notes. It’s all labor-intensive. Saving using apps’ Save features doesn’t work because info ends up in too many places, and in reddit’s case I sometimes delete the app (when it becomes a time sink), and there go my savings.Another example: I’d like to compile a “favorite Youtube channels/videos” collection, organized by topic (math, fun, 3D printing), to share with friends. It takes too much time and will never happen. What happens most often is I inconsistently save things to Apple Notes, email, an app’s Save feature, etc. - very sloppy, then often not referenced because I have no idea where I “buried the nut”.Over time I’ve played with various note taking apps (recently Things), mind maps, even spreadsheets, but nothing clicks. I like the graphic view of mind maps (MindNode), but again, too slow to input and maintain. Perhaps the ultimate solution is to some day let AI handle the whole process, then query with English, not knowing or caring how it works. Not sure I’ve described this well, but if any of you have been here and found a solution, I’m interested. Thanks.
